The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) visited the GCC Patent Office

His Excellency the Secretary General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), Dr. Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani, accompanied by His Excellency Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs Mr. Abdullah Al-Shibli, visited the Patent Office of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC Patent Office) Monday morning 07/01/2013, where they have been received by the Director General of the Office Mr. Shayea AlShayea and senior officials of the Office.
The Secretary-General toured in the Patent Office building and have been updated about the tasks, the plans and programs carried out for the development of the work and activities of the Office for upgrading the services it provides.
The Secretary-General also met with the Patent Office employees, where he expressed his thanks and pleasure for their hard work, which built good reputation of the Office, noting the young GCC-nationals skills working in the Office.
The Secretary-General congratulated the officials and all employees of the GCC Patent Office and the staff of the GCC Secretariat General on the decision of the Council for the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Council) of the WTO approving the request of the GCC Secretariat General of granting it observer status in the TRIPS Council. He mentioned that this decision was the result of the efforts of workers, the dedication and devotion in the performance of responsibilities to them, stressing the need to use more effort and dedication to work and strengthen the spirit of cooperation and teamwork in order to preserve the Patent Office achievements and reputation as a GCC organization seeking to promote GCC integration.
The GCC Secretary General said that this decision will allow the GCC Secretariat to participate in the meetings of TRIPS Council of the World Trade Organization and to follow the latest developments on the topics on the agenda of the Council. He added that it will also contribute in enhancing the positive role played by the GCC Secretariat General in this area.
It is worth mentioning that the TRIPS Council was created in accordance with the Agreement Establishing the WTO, and its functions are to monitor the implementation of the TRIPS Agreement. Its membership is open to all members of the World Trade Organization.
