[57] Abstract: A map projection method is disclosed comprising the steps of projecting surface data using a first projection method, thereby generating first intermediate data, projecting the surface data using a second projection method, thereby generating second intermediate data, and combining the first and second intermediate data to generate a projected map. Furthermore, an apparatus for map projections comprising storage means for storing surface data, and one or more processing units connected to the storage means for projecting the surface data using a first projection method to generate first intermediate data, for projecting the surface data using a second projection method to generate second intermediate data, and for combining the first and second intermediate data to generate the projected map is disclosed.
